Just that fast…it’s August!

Summer has been spectacular so far…the blue waters have been cool but delightfully refreshing, the sky has been amazing, kids have shrieked and laughed…and who could ask for a more incredible place to be?

Walloon Writers Review is an independent literary journal rooted in Northern Michigan.  Our mission is to provide an avenue for writers and photographers to share their passion and their art with the community.  We are proud to remind everyone that our 2nd Edition Deadline is September 5th!

To encourage new writers and artists, please note that we do not retain any rights, instead, upon acceptance for publication, we will ask you to provide written permission to publish your work.

Our theme is Northern Michigan – but that doesn’t mean you have to live in Northern Michigan…just keep that common thread in your work.  Maybe you are here for the summer, maybe you just drove through for the first time.  It’s inspiring and the creativity the natural surroundings bring forth needs a place to go…

We use Submittable to stay (somewhat) organized and consistent in communication.  Our earlier post this year indicated a $2.00 reading fee, however, our print costs and distribution bump us to $5.00.  We will however, make another donation with a portion of the reading fee to a non-profit nature conservancy organization, one with a mission of preserving the spectacular natural setting around us.  Last year, we donated to Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council.

Please join us in growing this exciting print publication!

Another beautiful day in paradise…

Summer 2016Welcoming sunshine starting each day here this Fourth of July weekend and the breeze is amazing.  While the website has been a bit quiet, twitter account has been the faster way to share weekly sorts of updates and shares.  Follow us at @walloonwriters.

Walloon Writers Review has been keeping tabs on all the happenings here in the North part of Michigan and excited to share nice news.  We hope you will join our group and submit your creative writing or photography for publication in our PRINTED magazine (!).  New deadline is at the end of summer….

Very pleased to share the good news of First Edition contributing writer, Randy Evans!  He is one of the very special authors to have his book shared with fans at Mclean & Eakin Booksellers in a recent author event for Red Sky Anthology:  Reading Out Loud in Northern Michigan.

Kind words from McLean & Eakin Booksellers Petoskey website for the first of his series:

Refreshing, compassionate, funny, Randy Evans’s border-crossing collection (light verse to novels) never loses Randy’s voice or identity as he shifts from one genre to another. Enjoy poetry about the beauty of northern Michigan. Read a short story about Big Little Hawk, a single mother who lives on a promontory overlooking Little Traverse Bay during the Bronze Age; a second story about Mikage, a Japanese American woman who shoots her way out of a bad marriage to save Gino, her parakeet; a one-act play about Stanley Sly, the worst boss you can imagine. This is just a sampling of what you will enjoy in Red Sky Anthology, the first of four books in Red Sky Series.

For budding writers, we have moved our Second Edition deadline to September 5, 2016 to capture all of the writers just getting in their summer writing groove.  Similar concept as First Edition, keep it to 3,000 words or less, thread it to Northern Michigan and remember we are a General Public publication. There is so much to write about and so many moments of northern Michigan around you….(please note that photography should be watermarked with your copyright in the upper right or lower right corner).

Please use Submittable.com for submissions & note that of our Submission Fee of $2.o0 we will make a donation to a local organization that is hell-bent on preserving the natural beauty around us.

For questions, email editor@walloonwriters.com.  Snail Mail: Walloon Writers Review PO BOX 2460 Petoskey, MI  49770.

Gotta find my sunscreen….and just starting another good book!  Watch for Harbor Springs Festival of the Book updates – more exciting authors coming to the area!

November barrels through…

Moody writers know that this is a great month for writing….heavy grey clouds, fierce cold winds, and the errant leaves fighting for a few more weeks of display.  Now would be a good time to reach for the keyboard and start or finish your submission for our Second Edition.  We are seeking writers from or who have passed through Northern Michigan and the upper peninsula, and new creative voices that share thoughts, stories, poetry or photography with a common thread of the northern half of the State of Michigan.  Check out our “About” tab for Writers Guidelines.  Photography can be submitted to the same tab on Submittable…all rights stay with the original writer/artist.  We’re starting to see a few trickle in….Deadline is 12/31/2014.

Thanks for sharing your work with us and keep your hand on your hat today…

Walloon Writers Review First Edition is available for purchase at Between The Covers in Harbor Springs, MI  ….

Happy Halloween from Walloon Writers Review

It’s kind of scary but the deadline for submissions for Walloon Writers Review, an independent contemporary literary magazine, is looming.  Please put us on your calendar and remember we are hoping to limit submissions to 3,000 words.  All original writing AND photography is welcome – please thread your submission back to Northern Michigan and or the Upper Peninsula in content.

We welcome simultaneous submissions and all rights remain with the original author or artist.  Please note that our standards are suitable for general audience.

Breathe in the fall wind and watch the last of the colors fall to the ground and note our December 31, 2015 deadline.

The start of something new…

Walloon Writers Review would like to thank the contributing authors of our First Edition, including Randy Evans, Elizabeth O’Donnell, Bill Chatterson, Janelle Roberts, Robert Fawcett and Christopher J. Anastasi.  The creativity of their writing, the vivid capture of the natural settings we experience in Northern Michigan and the unique cross section of ‘voices’ made this publication so exciting, we couldn’t wait to get the finished version ready to go!  With a little improvisation, we were able to pull a print version together and hope you will enjoy it.

We have been invited to make copies available for sale of Walloon Writers Review First Edition at a favorite bookstore in the area, Between The Covers in Harbor Springs.  If you get the chance, stop in to peruse the exciting offering of books by Michigan authors in this welcoming shop, located at 106 E. Main Street.  Easy to find and easy to be in there for way too long and come out with an armload of unplanned books to read!

Walloon Writers Review is accepting submissions for Second Edition, due last day of this calendar year, which will be longer, and will also include a donation of reading fees to a local non-profit organization. We are casting our line out further into the water and welcoming a less specific theme, just a thread tying your line to Northern Michigan and/or the Upper Peninsula and encouraging photography.

All rights stay with the original writers and artists and a portion of the reading fee will be donated to an area non-profit.  First Edition contributors supported Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council, a non-profit organization that “speaks for the Northern Michigan’s waters” and ” is dedicated to protection our lakes, streams, wetlands and groundwater..”.   More information about this important organization is available on the last page of First Edition or you can check them out at www.watershedcouncil.org.

For many of us, anywhere north in Michigan is a passion and fall is the best time to feel inspired-from brilliantly colorful surroundings to smoky cold mornings and starfilled nights. We hope Walloon Writers Review offers a place for you to share your passion through writing and photography or to enjoy the creativity of others.

Your comments are appreciated and your feedback is important.  Please write to editor@walloonwriters.com to share your thoughts.

Submissions should be made through our Submittable account for accuracy and response.  Photographers:  please include your own copyright symbol.
